SHORT ON TIME? HERE’S THE GIST:
After thoroughly testing and reviewing various eSIMs for Egypt, here are my top recommendations:
- NEW! Airalo Discover+ Global eSIM (cheapest calling, texting, and data for Egypt + 129 other countries; comes in 1GB, 2GB, 3GB, 5GB, 10GB, and 20GB options & 10-200 minutes)
- AIRALO SEPTEMBER SALE! New customers get 15% off with code SEP15
- Existing customers still get 10% off with code SEP10 🙂
- Airalo Giza Mobile (data only)
- Same September discount codes apply 😊
If you want an eSIM that covers the region including Egypt or you’re on a world trip, the Airalo Discover+ Global eSIM is your best bet – it’s the cheapest on the market for what’s included and even the data-only option is cheaper than Airalo’s Menalink regional eSIM.
If you’re a digital nomad or require substantial data for hotspotting, the Airalo Discover+ Global eSIM wins again, covering various countries including Egypt with the cheapest data options available.
For those specifically visiting Egypt and seeking affordable data, the Airalo Giza Mobile Egypt-specific eSIM is a fantastic option.
If you don’t want to stress about data caps, it’s best to still calculate your average data usage over your past travels and opt for an eSIM that will include that amount, with options to top up. While I used to recommend the Holafly unlimited data eSIM for this, their customer service quite frankly sucks and they’re unresponsive to any inquiries. Better to go with Maya Mobile which has an automatic top-up option.

The Best eSIM for Egypt:
eSIM Basics

What is an eSIM?
An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card built into devices like smartphones and tablets. Instead of physically swapping out SIM cards when changing networks, you can update your eSIM profile directly on your device.
Convenient, isn’t it? 🙂
Why would you need an eSIM data plan?
Simply put, an eSIM data plan is a traveler’s best friend. It allows you to switch to a local network without the fuss of obtaining a physical SIM card.
This is a game-changer especially if you’re someone who travels often. You can purchase a local Egyptian eSIM plan from anywhere in the world; no need to set foot in Egypt first!
Moreover, travel eSIM plans offer flexibility. You can switch between plans or carriers without the physical hassle of changing SIM cards.

How is an eSIM better than standard SIM cards?
eSIMs offer several advantages over traditional SIM cards. Firstly, they take up less physical space in your device, a crucial factor for gadgets with limited room.
Security is another strong point for eSIMs. They’re not prone to physical damage or theft, unlike their traditional counterparts. For most Egypt eSIMs, you don’t even need to provide an ID to get started.
Contrast this with physical SIMs: you’d need to bring your passport and navigate the process of obtaining a SIM card upon arrival, potentially in a language you’re not fluent in.
Lastly, eSIMs are more eco-friendly. They eliminate the need for physical SIM cards, reducing waste, which I love. 🙂
Data needed when traveling to EGYPT
How much data will you actually need for your trip to Egypt? The answer varies depending on your travel style.
For light activities like checking emails, navigating with maps, or exploring top tourist spots, a few hundred megabytes (MB) per day should suffice.
But if you’re into heavier data usage, like streaming videos or frequent social media updates, you’ll need more.
A helpful reference point
As someone who travels about 10 days each month and creates content on the go, my data usage averages around 6.2GB per trip. In the past four months, my monthly data consumption has varied, ranging from as low as 1.3GB to as high as 14.6GB. If you’re the type who frequently checks emails, accesses cloud storage, engages on social media, and uploads photos and videos while traveling, you might want to consider having at least this much data available for your trip to Egypt.
Roaming with your home provider can get costly, particularly if you’re consuming a lot of data. That’s why opting for an eSIM can be a more economical choice, even for light browsing.
To put it in perspective, a standard phone plan in the United States, for example Verizon, might charge $10 per day for international data. So, if you’re in Egypt for 10 days using just 50MB of data daily, you’d end up spending $100 solely on data.
Contrast this with an eSIM for Egypt, where you could get up to 2GB of data for as little as $12.50.
All in all, if you’re a heavy data user, it’s crucial to pick the right eSIM. Look for providers offering higher data limits or unlimited data options (like a Holafly eSIM), and the ability to top-up if you run out (all features I compare across providers below).

HOW TO USE AN ESIM FOR EGYPT
When you purchase an eSIM for Egypt, you’ll receive a QR code to scan with your smartphone.
Scanning this code will automatically install the eSIM profile on your cell phone, enabling you to connect to a local Egyptian network without requiring a physical SIM card.
I really like Airalo’s additional feature of automatic installation in-app, so there’s no need to scan a QR code or go through as many steps.
is esim available in egypt?
eSIMs are available in Egypt through Vodafone, Etisalat, and Orange Mobile. However, these are only accessible to postpaid/contract customers.
Unfortunately, prepaid customers currently have no local eSIM options. Given these factors, eSIMs are clearly the most convenient choice for travelers in Egypt.
The Best eSIM for Egypt:
Pros/Cons of getting an eSIM vs. buying a physical SIM card for Egypt
To make it easiest to compare the pros and cons of getting an eSIM for Egypt versus buying a physical SIM card in Egypt, I’ve made this easy-to-reference table:
FACTORS | ESIM | PHYSICAL SIM |
Cost | Generally cheaper, especially for short-term travelers | May require upfront costs and could be more expensive for short stays |
Convenience | Purchased online; no ID usually required; QR code activation | Must visit a store; ID and passport often required; physical installation, likely with a language barrier |
Data allowance | Flexible plans, easy to top-up online (depending on provider/eSIM) | Plans may be less flexible; top-up might require store visit |
Internet speed | Usually high-speed, depending on the provider | Speed can vary, also provider-dependent |
Duration | Can be used for a specific period, usually 30 days or more | Typically valid for longer periods of time; 90 days or more |
Reusability | Easily reusable for future trips and other countries, depending on provider | May expire if not used for an extended period, and usually not usable in other countries |
Risk of loss | No risk of physical loss – stored on device | Risk of losing or damaging the physical card |
Availability | May not be available with all traditional providers, but many options online | Not available with many traditional providers now, but will likely increase in Egypt as regulations change |
As you can see from the table, going for an eSIM in Egypt has some pretty sweet perks. The big wins here are the convenience, cost savings, and the freedom to get all set up before you even pack your bags.
And I don’t know about you, but I don’t speak Arabic, so there’s also the benefit of not having to fret over language barriers when getting a SIM card!
Now, that isn’t to say a physical SIM card in Egypt isn’t without its merits. You might snag faster internet speeds and maybe even more data, but keep in mind this usually comes with a heftier price tag and the extra step of finding a store.
So, what’s the best pick for you? Well, it all boils down to what you personally need and prefer for your trip to Egypt.

1. Airalo eSIM for Egypt: Airalo Giza Mobile
Starting with Airalo, this eSIM provider has been a game-changer in the market, offering a wide range of plans specifically for Egypt. You have options from 1GB for a week to a robust 5GB for a full month. Plus, if you find yourself running low, topping up is an option.
When it comes to cost, Airalo is the clear winner, period. Their eSIM plans for Egypt begin at just $7 and can go up to $26.50 for a 30-day, 5GB plan. So, it’s definitely a budget-friendly choice.
I’ve found the activation process (mostly) straightforward. A quick online or in-app purchase and a few minutes for activation are all it takes to connect to Egypt’s Orange network.
Personally, I’ve turned to Airalo for my regular trips to Europe, especially since the UK and Europe have ended their free-roaming agreement. Apart from a small hiccup in Denmark, my experience has been largely seamless.
And, if you do have troubles, rest assured their customer service team will help you sort it out!
However, there is one caveat: the Airalo Giza Mobile eSIM doesn’t come with calling capabilities. Especially for solo female travelers going to Egypt, having the ability to make calls is crucial for safety reasons.
So, what if you need an eSIM that does it all—data, calling, and texting? Check out Airalo’s new Discover+ Global eSIM for Egypt below!

2. Best eSIM for Egypt with Unlimited Data: Holafly Egypt eSIM
The Holafly eSIM for Egypt is a strong choice for anyone looking for a data-rich option on their trip to Egypt. What sets Holafly apart? It’s the only major eSIM provider that offers unlimited data plans.
Prices start at $27 at the time of writing, and you can choose from a variety of plans that last anywhere from 5 to 20 days, all on Egypt’s Etisalat Misr network. This flexibility makes it ideal for slow travelers or content creators who need a dependable internet connection without fretting over data limits.
Three things to note about the Holafly Egypt eSIM, however, are that:
- It doesn’t allow you to share data, like hosting a hotspot. So, if you were planning to use it for remote work on your laptop, you’ll need to look elsewhere (I recommend Airalo because their data is most affordable and you can easily top up).
- It doesn’t offer calling or texting capabilities, so it’s not a great option for solo female travelers or in case of emergencies.
- Holafly’s customer service is pretty spotty. I’ve sent them multiple inquiries over the past few months and they haven’t responded once. Not a good look, IMO.
For these reasons, I think there are better eSIMs out there, even if you want unlimited data. For this, I recommend calculating the average data you’ve used on your past three trips. Then, start with an eSIM plan including at least that amount that allows you to also easily top up.
You can even consider Maya Mobile’s automatic top-up option if you really want to make sure you’re never without data for an extended period of time!
3. GlobaleSIM Egypt eSIM
GlobaleSIM is another provider of eSIMs for Egypt and is a decent choice.
Their super affordable plans start at just $9 for 1GB of data for 7 days. 100 minutes of calling costs an additional $10, 200 minutes an additional $17 from the base price, and 300 minutes for an additional $25 from the base price. 100 minutes should be more than enough!
While nothing in GlobaleSIM’s information, website, or terms & conditions states that you can’t hotspot with their Middle East eSIM, data sharing with this eSIM is currently unconfirmed. However, you can top up if you need more data.
Purchasing a GlobaleSIM plan for Egypt or for the Middle East is easy online or in their app.

4. Maya Mobile eSIM Egypt Plan
Another solid option for staying connected in Egypt with a large, reputable carrier is Maya Mobile’s Egypt eSIM. With plans ranging from $13 to $65, they offer a variety of data packages to suit different needs—1GB, 3GB, 5GB, or 10GB, all valid for 30 days.
One of the standout features is the top-up option. Maya Mobile even offers an auto-renew process, ensuring you’re never without data. This is especially handy if your trip to Egypt extends beyond a month.
One thing to note, while data sharing is allowed, making it a versatile choice for those needing to connect multiple devices, it doesn’t offer calling or texting capabilities.
5. Nomad Egypt eSIM
Nomad also offers a competitive eSIM for Egypt that’s very similar to Maya Mobile but slightly cheaper, with plans that range from $11 to $65. You can opt for a quick 1GB plan that’s good for 7 days, or go for more data—3GB, 5GB, or 10GB—all valid for 30 days.
Top-ups are also allowed with Nomad. So if you find yourself running low on data, you can easily add more.
Data sharing is also on the table with Nomad, making it a flexible choice if you need to connect more than just your phone.
However, like many of the other options, calling and texting aren’t included.
You can snag this eSIM either online or via their app, making the purchase and activation process a breeze.

1. Best eSIM for the Middle East with Calling & Texting: Airalo Discover+ Global eSIM
Before, GlobaleSIM’s Middle East eSIM was the best option for data in the Middle East along with calling and texting options. However, as I wrote this guide, Airalo came out with a new Global eSIM with calling and SMS as all of us Airalo fans said, “finally!”
The Discover+ Global eSIM gives you the best bang for your buck for so many situations on your trip to Egypt, including:
- You want data for any other countries besides Egypt on the same trip (cheaper than Airalo’s regional Menalink eSIM)
- You’re on a world trip
- You’re a solo female traveler so you need some calling options for emergencies
- You want flexible calling & SMS options that only give you what you need (10-20 minutes should be all you need in case of emergencies)
- You want all this and you’re on a budget
Data-only plans start at $9 for 1GB for 7 days and packages including data, calls, and texts start at $15 for 1GB, 10 minutes, and 10 SMS for 7 days. 129 other countries besides Egypt are included, along with most, if not all, countries in North Africa and the Middle East.
For maximum flexibility, options, and countries covered for current and future travels, the Airalo Discover+ Global eSIM is going to be your new best friend!
(Can you tell I’m excited they finally came out with this? 🙂 )
2. Airalo Menalink eSIM (15 countries including Egypt)
Airalo’s North Africa and Middle East regional eSIM, the Menalink, used to make the most sense if you wanted the most affordable regional eSIM for Egypt. However, since Airalo came out with their Discover+ Global eSIM, this eSIM doesn’t really make sense anymore.
Here’s a comparison table to see their value side-by-side:
AIRALO ESIM | 1GB | 2GB | 3GB | 5GB | 10GB | 20GB | TOPUPS? | DATA SHARING? | CALLING? | CONVENIENCE |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Menalink | 7 days, $15 USD | 15 days, $28 USD | 30 days, $39 USD | 30 days | – | – | Yes | Yes | No | Online/automatic installation from app |
Discover+ Global (data only) | 7 days, $9 USD | 15 days, $17 USD | 30 days, $24 USD | 60 days, $35 USD | 180 days, $59 USD | 365 days, $69 USD | ||||
Discover+ Global (with calling & texting) | 7 days, $15 USD, 10 mins, 10 SMS | 15 days, $27 USD, 20 mins, 20 SMS | 30 days, $36 USD, 30 mins, 30 SMS | 60 days, $50 USD, 50 mins, 50 SMS | 180 days, $79 USD, 100 mins, 100 SMS | 365 days, $89 USD, 200 mins, 200 SMS | Yes | No | Yes | Online/automatic installation from app |
As you can see, if you want data within the region, the Discover+ is a clear winner – you’ll get calling and texting as well as data for a slightly lower price than the Menalink, which only offers data.
And if you want data only, it really doesn’t make sense to get the Menalink over the Discover+ – it’s more expensive in all categories.
What’s Airalo thinking? Right now, I’m not sure. Perhaps these are promotional prices while the Discover+ Global eSIM is new. So, best to check here and here for up-to-date prices in case these don’t last!

3. GlobaleSIM Middle East eSIM (9 countries including Egypt)
Last but not least, there is the GlobaleSIM Middle East eSIM for regional coverage including Egypt.
Where I think the GlobaleSIM Middle East eSIM would be a better option compared to the Airalo Discover+ is if you want more flexibility in the number of minutes you add to your plan.
For example, say you only need 1GB for 7 days for your Egypt eSIM, but it’s important for you to have a lot more minutes than 10 or 20. That’s where the GlobaleSIM Middle East eSIM shines – you can add 100, 200, or 300 minutes to each data option they offer, from 1GB to 5GB.
Each additional 100 minutes costs $10 on top of the base price. The more minutes you need, the more cost-effective the GlobaleSIM Middle East eSIM is compared to the Airalo Discover+ Global eSIM. GlobaleSIM is the only eSIM provider that will allow you to have 100 minutes with less than 10GB of data on your plan.
The Best eSIM for Egypt:
Local wireless carriers offering eSIMs in Egypt
If you’re considering getting an eSIM from a local Egyptian mobile operator, you should know that options are limited. Currently, providers like Vodafone, Etisalat, and Orange Mobile do have eSIM services, but only for their postpaid or contract customers.
This means if you’re a traveler or someone interested in a pay-as-you-go plan, these local options won’t be available to you. It’s a limitation that can be inconvenient for those who value the flexibility of non-contract plans, especially while navigating Egypt.
So, while eSIM technology is becoming more common in Egypt, it’s not as accessible for everyone as you might wish. If you’re not a contract customer, you’ll need to look at alternative options (like the eSIMs in this guide!) for staying connected.

It’s a good idea to touch base with your device’s manufacturer or your mobile carrier to get a clear answer on eSIM support.
1. Buy Your eSIM
Curious about how to actually get your Egypt eSIM?
Luckily, it’s quite simple.
Just click on any of the eSIM links I’ve shared in this guide, and you’ll be guided through a straightforward purchase process on the eSIM provider’s site.
Most of the time, it’s super quick, and you often won’t even need to show an ID.
Once you’ve completed the purchase, expect an email that’ll help you get your eSIM up and running, usually with a QR code.
2. Install your eSIM
Up next, setting up your eSIM! You’ll want to make sure to do this before you depart for Egypt.
Simply go by the guidelines given by your eSIM provider. Typically, you’ll either scan a QR code or download the eSIM profile directly to your device (like with Airalo.)
You can generally find this option in your device’s settings, usually under “Cellular” or “Mobile Data”.
3. Activate your eSIM for Egypt
Again, you need to activate your eSIM for Egypt before you leave.
After downloading the eSIM profile to your device, a quick restart might be necessary to kick things off.
Post-restart, head to your device’s settings and choose the option to activate the eSIM. This might require punching in a code or verifying your identity with your eSIM provider (not typical).
Once that’s done, you should spot the eSIM plan in your network settings. Some eSIM providers require you to enter further details, like an access point name (APN). Make sure to follow the provider’s specific instructions for a smooth set-up!
Once you’ve done that, you’re all set to enjoy your eSIM once you land in Egypt. Just turn the eSIM off for now before you depart and turn it back on (with your home eSIM turned off to avoid roaming charges unless used for emergency calling) when you land!

Verdict: What’s the best eSIM for Egypt?
The straightforward response to what’s the best eSIM for Egypt is: it’s all about what you need and how you travel.
But, to make things a tad easier, I’ve broken down a few scenarios below. Hopefully, you’ll spot one that feels just right and helps you pick the perfect eSIM for your trip to Egypt.
You might spot a trend with Airalo and get skeptical – no, I’m not sponsored by them to recommend their eSIMs. 🙂 They just so happen to have the most competitive prices and options available!

Who I don’t recommend for an Egypt eSIM
There are a few providers I haven’t covered here or don’t recommend for various reasons. They are:
- Holafly: If you really need unlimited data, they’re a good option, but their customer service is abysmal. If you need help or have an inquiry, they’re very unlikely to respond.
- ByteSIM: Overall my experience with them has been quite spammy. They prefer to communicate through unofficial channels like social media instead of emails. I’d say steer clear.
- Orange Global eSIM: While the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM is a favorite of mine for data, calling, and texting across Europe, in my opinion, their Global eSIM isn’t a good deal if you want an eSIM in Egypt. The cost and what’s included aren’t competitive with other options now available (like Airalo’s Discover+ Global eSIM).
Final thoughts on Egypt eSIMs
Navigating through the eSIM options for Egypt, you’ll find a range of great choices.
Each eSIM provider offers distinct features and benefits, so it’s essential to select one that fits your specific needs.
When choosing your eSIM for Egypt, consider factors like data speed, coverage, cost, and data limits. Also, ensure your device supports eSIMs and always follow the provider’s installation and activation instructions.
For those who travel to multiple countries, the Airalo Discover+ Global eSIM might be a good fit due to its international coverage.
But if you’re primarily focused on your trip to Egypt and just need data, the Airalo Giza Mobile eSIM could be your best bet.
Remember, while eSIMs provide a convenient way to stay connected, they’re just one part of your travel preparations. Always research your destination beforehand and be prepared for any connectivity challenges, such as limited coverage areas or potential roaming fees.
With the right eSIM choice and some planning, staying connected in Egypt can be straightforward and hassle-free.
Safe travels! 🐫

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
