Important Things to Know about Asos, Kefalonia
Before we dive into the must-see spots and hidden treasures of Asos, let’s clear up some common confusions that often trip up travelers. Trust me, a little clarity now can save you a lot of Googling later. 🙂

Asos vs. Assos
You might have seen reference to towns called both ‘Asos’ and ‘Assos’ on Kefalonia. This might leave you wondering: are Asos and Assos the same place?
Asos and Assos are indeed the same village, just spelled differently. You may have noticed the same with Kefalonia – sometimes also referred to as Cephalonia and even Kefallinia.
If you’re new to navigating the nuances of European travel like this, check out this helpful guide.
Where is Asos, Kefalonia?
Asos is a small village located on the northwestern coast of the beautiful Greek island of Kefalonia. It’s renowned for its iconic colorful houses and shutters on narrow streets lining a central harbor.
The population of Assos, Kefalonia is just 100 residents(!), offering a tranquil escape from the bustling tourist hotspots found elsewhere on Kefalonia.
And of all the villages and towns of the Ionian islands, I would definitely say Assos village in Kefalonia is one of the most beautiful.
How to get to Asos, Kefalonia
The most common way to reach Asos is by flying into Kefalonia International Airport (EFL). Most major cities in Greece as well as many major airports across Europe have flights to Kefalonia.
(If you’re arriving from North America, don’t miss these flying tips which can be a lifesaver for jet lag!)
From the airport, you can opt for a scenic drive through mountains, sea cliffs, and stunning olive tree forests, as Asos is just about 22 miles/35 kilometers away (or just under an hour’s drive). As I mentioned in my Kefalonia travel guide, renting a car is a convenient choice and is the best option for exploring the island at your own pace.
Alternatively, you can arrange a taxi or shuttle service to transfer you directly to Asos.
For those arriving from nearby islands, ferries operate between Kefalonia and several Greek islands. Arriving at the island’s ports, such as Argostoli or Sami, you can continue your journey to Asos by road.
(FYI, the port of Sami is about 20 minutes closer to Asos by car.)
Whichever way you get to Asos, you’ll be guaranteed glimpses of some of Kefalonia’s most stunning coastline, along with scenic landscapes that will set the stage for a memorable stay on the island of Kefalonia.
top Asos, Kefalonia tip:
stay connected and safe with an eSIM
🏥 As a female traveler, I always recommend you have a functional mobile connection at all times. This is so you can navigate more easily and contact emergency services if anything goes wrong and you need help (not to mention uploading Instagram stories 😜).
📞 The best SIM card for data and making calls in Kefalonia, and in fact Europe overall, in 2023 is the Orange Holiday Zen 8GB eSIM (or Europe 20GB eSIM for bigger trips).
📱 They offer unlimited calls and texts within Europe, which is perfect if you’re hitting more than just Kefalonia on your trip!
💾 And as an eSIM, you can easily load it onto your phone before you depart – no need to waste precious vacation time visiting a local kiosk and trying to communicate about a SIM card.
🤑 At 20 euros for the 8GB eSIM, this is definitely the most bang for your buck! This is because you can easily rack up that amount of roaming charges in just 1 or 2 days with your home cell phone provider if you’re from outside of Europe.
☎️ Though I strongly recommend you have calling capabilities to stay safe, Airalo also offers data-only eSIM cards that are even more affordable. I use these on every trip to Europe because my UK mobile provider still offers affordable calling rates in the EU, and I love them!
How to get around Kefalonia
While there are a few different options for getting around the island of Kefalonia, you’re definitely best off with a rental car.

What is the weather like in Kefalonia?
The weather in Kefalonia, including Asos, is Mediterranean, offering warm and sunny summers with mild winters.
During the peak summer months of June through August, temperatures range from 77-86 degrees Fahrenheit (25-30 Celsius). This creates the perfect conditions for outdoor activities like lounging at Assos Beach!
However, if you’re planning to stay for more than a couple of days in the summer, I recommend looking into accommodation options in Assos that offer air conditioning. It gets pretty hot and AC is pretty much a necessity here.
If you’re anything like me and quickly start melting in anything above 78 degrees, check out my picks for the best clothes for hot weather too!

Brief History of Asos
Asos came into existence under Venetian rule during the late 16th century. At that time, it functioned as the administrative hub for the northern part of Cephalonia.
To fortify the area, the Venetian Senate commissioned an Italian engineer, Marino Gentillini, to construct Assos Castle between 1593 and 1595. Notably, this castle ranks among the largest in Greece and was initially designed to safeguard the local community.
However, despite its grand design, the castle fell short of its intended role as a fortress for a few reasons, including the absence of a natural water supply. This ultimately led to the castle’s diminished importance. As a result, the initial plans were abandoned.
Nowadays, Assos Castle serves as a compelling historical site and is one of the must-do things to do in Assos, Kefalonia. Don’t miss this sight below!
Asos, Kefalonia Travel Guide:
Things to Do in Asos, Kefalonia
1. Assos Beach
You’ve probably seen those picture-perfect images of Assos Beach, Kefalonia by now, with its many boats floating in the harbor contrasted against the colorful buildings that have made Asos famous.
Assos Beach, while small, is a true gem of Kefalonia. Home to a small bay of emerald green water sheltered by lush hills, the charming pebble beach offers a serene escape for beach lovers.
In my opinion, visiting Assos Beach is one of the top things to do in Assos, Kefalonia!
The calm and shallow waters make it perfect for swimming and snorkeling. While it may not boast the bluest waters found elsewhere on Kefalonia, its calm waters are ideal for families.
There are also a handful of quaint tavernas that line Assos Beach. I really enjoyed getting a bite to eat here and sampling some of the delicious local Greek food and fresh seafood while enjoying the sea views!

2. Assos Castle
Perched atop a hill overlooking the village of Asos, Kefalonia, Assos Castle stands as a testament to the area’s rich history. The castle offers beautiful panoramic vistas.
And if you’re into history, Assos Castle is a must-visit along with the old churches in the area.
Dating back to the 16th century, the Venetian castle’s ruins provide a glimpse into the island’s past, inviting visitors to step back in time.
A 20-minute hike up to the castle from the village will reward you with stunning views of the Ionian Sea and the surrounding landscape.
(Just make sure to go early in the morning and bring plenty of water during the high season, as the sun will soon roast you alive! Also make sure to wear comfortable shoes for walking in the heat.)
Best of all, entry is free!
3. Wander the old town
The old town of Asos, Kefalonia is one of the main draws for many visitors from around the island. Wander around the narrow cobblestone streets winding around quaint, colorful houses and see what you discover!
The old town generally has a relaxed vibe and authentic atmosphere, making it a pleasant place to have a stroll and absorb the local ambiance.
If shopping is on your agenda, there are some charming shops in Assos, Kefalonia where you can pick up local crafts and souvenirs, too.
To make the most of your visit to Asos, consider walking around during the quieter hours, such as early morning or late afternoon. These times will offer a more tranquil experience, not to mention better lighting for photos!

4. Rent or get a taxi boat for the day
In my opinion, renting a boat for the day is a must-do for anyone visiting Kefalonia, or any Greek island for that matter!
We rented a boat out of Argostoli, but Asos arguably has even better access to some of the most untouched, private beaches of Kefalonia that are only accessible by water.
At Asos’s harbor, there are a number of companies through which you can rent a boat for the day. Walk into each and ask them their rate for the day. During high season, try to inquire the day before you intend to go to ensure availability!
Also, make sure to attempt this earlier rather than later during your trip to Kefalonia in case of cancellations due to bad weather.
One boat rental in Asos I recommend is Conteco Assos for their 4.9-star rating on Google, the boats and transfer options they offer, and their warm and friendly service.
5. Drive the scenic route above Asos
One of the best ways to truly appreciate the beauty of Asos, Kefalonia is to see it from above!
Asos sits on a small peninsula jutting out of Kefalonia’s northwest coast. If you drive on the winding coastal road between Myrtos Beach directly south and the road down to the peninsula, you’ll get an incredible Assos view.
We actually drove this road a few times before going down to Assos village to fully enjoy the view (and get some amazing drone shots!).
For more on capturing the perfect view, you might find my Kefalonia guide helpful. 🙂

6. Myrtos Beach
Myrtos Beach is perhaps the most famous, iconic location of Kefalonia island. Since it’s located just south of Asos, it’s super convenient to visit! This also makes Asos an ideal place to stay while visiting Kefalonia.
You can drive down and park directly at Myrtos Beach, where there are a few modest tavernas and beach cafes. However, Myrtos Beach is a little “wilder” than other more commercial beaches on the island, so it’s best to bring your own snacks and already have your swimsuit on when you arrive.
Equally worth visiting is the viewpoint above Myrtos Beach, where the photo below was taken. Get the exact location on my free Kefalonia Google tourist map!

5. Nefeli-Anait
Finally, Nefeli-Anait is the best option for where to eat in Asos, Kefalonia if you’d like to eat directly on the harbor.
As good restaurant options are a little limited in Asos these days, especially after some restaurants had to close due to the pandemic, experiences are hit-or-miss at Nefeli-Anait.
While I felt the food was nothing to write home about, it was clear they were doing the best they could while short-staffed. And certainly, the view is hard to beat!
So, if you give it a chance you may be pleasantly surprised by the delicious mussels, fresh swordfish, and friendly service.
